A572 Grade 50 steel plate is the most widely specified high-strength low-alloy structural steel in North America, offering a 39% improvement in minimum yield strength over A36 at a modest cost premium. The ASTM A572 specification guarantees a minimum yield strength of 50,000 psi and minimum tensile strength of 65,000 psi, enabling structural engineers to design lighter, more efficient structures that reduce total steel tonnage.
The high-strength low-alloy approach achieves elevated mechanical properties through micro-additions of columbium (niobium), vanadium, or nitrogen rather than increased carbon content. This is a critical distinction from quenched and tempered steels, because the low carbon equivalent of A572 Grade 50 preserves excellent weldability. The material welds with all standard processes using matching E70XX electrodes without mandatory preheat requirements for thicknesses up to approximately 1-1/2 inches.
Building codes and design specifications increasingly favor A572 Grade 50 over A36 for structural applications. The AISC Steel Construction Manual lists Grade 50 as the default specification for W-shapes, and most domestic mills now roll structural shapes exclusively to the dual-certified A36/A572 Grade 50 standard. For plate applications, specifying A572 Grade 50 ensures consistent 50 ksi minimum yield regardless of thickness.
A572 Grade 50 plate is hot rolled with the characteristic mill scale surface common to structural steels. It is available with Charpy impact testing to meet seismic and low-temperature requirements when specified. Our A572 Grade 50 plate blanks are flame-cut, plasma-cut, or saw-cut from certified domestic mill plate in thicknesses from 1/4 inch through 1-1/2 inches.
