A36 steel plate blanks are the most widely used structural steel in North America, specified everywhere from skyscraper columns to farm equipment repairs. The A36 designation is an ASTM specification that guarantees a minimum yield strength of 36,000 psi with excellent weldability and ductility, making it the default material for welded structural fabrication. Unlike specific alloy grades, A36 is defined by its mechanical properties rather than exact chemical composition, which gives mills flexibility to optimize production while ensuring consistent performance.
A36 plate is hot rolled, which means it has a characteristic dark mill scale surface and wider dimensional tolerances compared to cold-finished products. For applications where surface finish matters, the mill scale can be removed by grinding, sandblasting, or pickling. The rough surface actually provides an excellent key for paint adhesion, which is why A36 is the preferred substrate for painted structural steel.
Weldability is one of A36's greatest strengths. Its carbon content stays below 0.29%, placing it firmly in the easily weldable range for all common processes. MIG, TIG, stick, and flux-core welding all produce sound joints without preheat requirements for material under one inch thick. This makes A36 plate blanks the go-to starting material for welded brackets, frames, machine bases, and fabricated assemblies.
A36 plate blanks are not the ideal choice for machining-intensive parts, as the hot-rolled surface and variable microstructure can produce inconsistent finishes. For CNC work, 1018 cold-rolled offers better machinability and tighter tolerances. Our A36 plate blanks are flame-cut or saw-cut from certified mill plate in thicknesses from 1/4 inch through 2 inches.
