316 stainless steel sheet blanks are the premium austenitic stainless grade for applications demanding superior corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-bearing environments where standard 304 falls short. The critical difference is the addition of 2-3% molybdenum to the 16-18% chromium and 10-14% nickel base composition, which dramatically improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion from chlorides, saltwater, and aggressive cleaning chemicals.
Marine environments are where 316 earns its reputation. Boat hardware, deck fittings, railing components, and underwater fasteners made from 316 sheet resist the pitting corrosion that degrades 304 in continuous saltwater exposure. This same chloride resistance makes 316 the standard grade for pharmaceutical cleanrooms where chlorinated sanitizers are used daily.
The mechanical properties of 316 sheet closely mirror 304, with a minimum tensile strength of 75,000 psi and 30,000 psi yield strength in the annealed condition. Elongation of 40% minimum ensures excellent formability for brake bending, stamping, and drawing operations.
Welding 316 sheet follows the same practices as 304, using TIG or MIG with 316L filler wire to maintain corrosion resistance in the weld zone. Post-weld passivation with citric or nitric acid restores the full corrosion resistance of the heat-affected zone. Our 316 stainless sheet blanks are sheared from certified 2B mill finish coil stock in gauges from 22 gauge through 1/4 inch.
