303 Free-Machining Stainless Bar Blanks

303 stainless steel bar blanks are the free-machining variant of the austenitic 300-series family, engineered specifically for high-speed CNC turning, screw machine operations, and any application where machinability is the primary material selection criterion. The addition of sulfur (0.15% minimum) creates manganese sulfide inclusions that act as chip breakers during cutting, dramatically improving tool life and enabling faster feed rates compared to 304 or 316. The machinability advantage of 303 over standard austenitic grades is substantial. Where 304 rates approximately 45% on the B1112 free-machining steel scale, 303 achieves roughly 78%, representing a significant improvement in production throughput and tooling cost. Chips break cleanly and evacuate efficiently from automatic screw machines and CNC lathes. The corrosion resistance of 303 is slightly lower than 304 due to the sulfide inclusions, which can act as initiation sites for pitting in aggressive environments. For most atmospheric, mild chemical, and indoor applications, the difference is negligible. The sulfur content also makes 303 unsuitable for welding, as the sulfide inclusions cause hot cracking in the weld zone. 303 bar stock is available in round, hexagonal, and square cross-sections to accommodate different chucking and machining requirements.
