7075-T6 aluminum sheet blanks deliver the highest strength available in a standard wrought aluminum alloy, with tensile strength of 83,000 psi that rivals many structural steels at roughly one-third the weight. The 7075 alloy is a zinc-based system (5.1-6.1% zinc, 2.1-2.9% magnesium, 1.2-2.0% copper) that achieves its exceptional strength through the T6 precipitation hardening treatment. This makes 7075-T6 sheet the default material for aerospace structures, high-performance sporting goods, and any application where strength-to-weight ratio is the primary design driver.
Unlike 6061-T6, which offers a balance of properties including good weldability and anodizing response, 7075-T6 is optimized purely for mechanical performance. The alloy is not recommended for fusion welding because the heat-affected zone becomes susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. Mechanical fastening, adhesive bonding, and friction stir welding are the preferred joining methods.
7075-T6 sheet machines well with sharp carbide tooling at moderate to high speeds. The higher hardness compared to 6061 actually produces cleaner chip formation and better surface finishes in many operations. The alloy is an excellent candidate for CNC profiling of complex aerospace brackets, gussets, and structural fittings where every gram of weight savings matters.
Corrosion resistance of 7075-T6 is adequate for most atmospheric environments but inferior to 6061 and significantly inferior to 5052. For applications requiring both high strength and enhanced corrosion protection, alclad 7075-T6 sheet is available with a thin layer of commercially pure aluminum metallurgically bonded to each surface. Our 7075-T6 sheet blanks are sheared from certified aerospace-grade mill stock in thicknesses from 0.020 inches through 0.190 inches.
