Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V titanium plate blanks represent the highest-performance structural metal commercially available for CNC machining of aerospace, medical, and defense components. Ti-6Al-4V is an alpha-beta alloy containing 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium that accounts for more than 50% of all titanium used worldwide. In the mill-annealed condition, the alloy delivers a minimum tensile strength of 130,000 psi and yield strength of 120,000 psi at a density of just 0.160 lb/in³ — providing a specific strength that exceeds every commonly used steel and aluminum alloy.
Aerospace applications consume the majority of Ti-6Al-4V plate production. Structural bulkheads, wing carry-through structures, engine mount fittings, and landing gear components are CNC machined from plate stock on high-rigidity five-axis machines. The alloy's excellent fatigue strength, which approaches 50% of ultimate tensile strength at 10 million cycles, makes it the material of choice for dynamically loaded airframe components.
Machining Ti-6Al-4V plate requires careful technique but produces excellent results with proper setup. Sharp carbide inserts with positive rake geometry, cutting speeds of 100-200 SFM, aggressive chip loads, high-pressure through-spindle coolant, and climb milling are the keys to productive titanium machining.
Ti-6Al-4V plate can be solution treated and aged (STA) to increase tensile strength to approximately 170,000 psi for applications requiring maximum mechanical performance. Our plate blanks are saw-cut from certified ASTM B265 and AMS 4911 mill plate in thicknesses from 0.250 inches through 2.000 inches, with full chemical and mechanical test reports included.
