D2 tool steel bar blanks are the industry standard for cold-work tooling and high-wear applications where extreme edge retention and abrasion resistance are required. Classified as a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel, D2 contains approximately 1.5% carbon and 12% chromium. This composition produces a dense matrix of hard chromium carbides that give D2 its legendary wear resistance, roughly seven to ten times that of standard carbon steels. The 12% chromium content places D2 in a semi-stainless category. While it does not meet the 13% minimum for true stainless classification, D2 offers significantly better corrosion resistance than carbon steels, O1, or A2 tool steels. It develops a light surface stain rather than deep rust in humid conditions, and with proper care it serves well in moderately corrosive environments. Heat treating D2 requires more precision than simple carbon steels. The recommended austenitizing temperature is 1,825-1,875°F with a 20-30 minute soak, followed by air cooling or plate quenching. Triple tempering at 300-400°F for knife applications or 950°F for maximum secondary hardness in die applications optimizes the balance between hardness and toughness. D2 achieves 58-62 HRC depending on the tempering temperature selected. For knife makers, D2 delivers outstanding edge retention that significantly outperforms 1084 and O1 in slicing tasks, though it requires more effort to sharpen. For tooling applications, D2 bar blanks serve as the starting material for stamping dies, punches, forming tools, and industrial cutting blades where tool life directly impacts production economics. Our D2 bar blanks ship in the annealed condition for easiest machining and profiling.
