1084 high carbon steel bar blanks are the most popular steel for knife making in North America, prized for their forgiving heat treatment, excellent edge retention, and consistent performance batch to batch. With a carbon content of 0.80-0.93% and a simple manganese alloy system, 1084 achieves working hardness of 60-62 HRC through a straightforward quench-and-temper process that does not require specialized equipment or soak times critical to the minute.
The heat treatment for 1084 is remarkably simple compared to more complex alloy steels. The steel is heated to 1,475°F until non-magnetic plus approximately 50°F, then quenched in fast-moving parks 50 or similar medium-speed oil. After quenching, two temper cycles at 375-400°F for one hour each produce a blade with 60-61 HRC hardness, excellent toughness, and fine grain structure. This simplicity makes 1084 the steel that knife-making instructors consistently recommend to beginners.
Despite its beginner-friendly reputation, 1084 produces professional-quality knives. The high manganese content promotes deep hardening and fine pearlite formation, which translates to blades that sharpen easily and hold a working edge through heavy use. The steel also etches beautifully for hamon and damascus patterns. Many professional bladesmiths use 1084 as the high-carbon layer in pattern-welded damascus paired with 15N20 nickel steel.
1084 bar stock machines well in the annealed condition and grinds cleanly on belt grinders with standard ceramic or aluminum oxide belts. Our bar blanks are precision-cut from annealed mill stock in the most popular knife-making dimensions, ready for profiling and grinding.
