410 stainless steel plate blanks are the most widely used martensitic stainless grade, offering a unique combination of moderate corrosion resistance with the ability to be heat treated to high hardness levels that austenitic grades like 304 and 316 cannot achieve. With 11.5-13.5% chromium and up to 0.15% carbon, 410 occupies the critical position where stainless corrosion resistance meets hardenability. In the annealed condition, 410 plate machines readily and can be formed, drilled, and fabricated using standard shop practices. After fabrication, the material can be hardened by austenitizing at 1,800°F followed by oil or air quenching, then tempered between 400-1,400°F to achieve the desired balance of hardness and toughness. Typical heat-treated hardness ranges from 35-41 HRC. The corrosion resistance of 410 exceeds that of carbon and alloy steels by a wide margin, resisting atmospheric corrosion, mild chemicals, fresh water, and steam. However, it does not approach the performance of austenitic grades in chloride or acidic environments. The best corrosion resistance is achieved in the hardened and tempered condition with a polished or passivated surface finish. Welding 410 plate requires preheat of 400-600°F and controlled interpass temperature to prevent cold cracking in the heat-affected zone. Post-weld heat treatment is strongly recommended. Our 410 stainless plate blanks ship in the annealed condition for maximum machinability and formability, cut from certified mill plate in thicknesses from 1/4 inch through 2 inches.
